What can one say after reading this essay. Heartbreak? But heartbreak paralyzes. Outrage? But outrage lowers effectiveness. Helplessness? But helplessness immobilizes. Hope? But hope breeds procrastination. Grief? But grief turns ones attention away.
For me, your essay engenders a spirit of never forgetting; of mindfulness every day of what is happening to the world. To possess the spirit of "all one need do to cover the world with leather, is to wear leather soled shoes," .. to wear those shoes of concern for the environment every day and let that bring forth appropriate acts large and small..
Oh, Michael, thanks. Your responses are always so kind, generous and wise. Your reflections back are themselves little essays, little gifts of that thing with blood, little prayers for all this we are losing.
Thank you for embracing the word sacrifice. It is essential in this point of time. I will continue to ponder what I will sacrifice for this planet that I love.
Urgency is the correct word. Not quite panic but close.
I cry each time I am with my children and my grandchildren realizing the pain that they are most likely to suffer as the environment continues to deteriorate.
Michael is correct, mindfulness is what is needed with every act. Do everything that we can to reduce our impact. We are not perfect and we could always do more. But do not feel defeated.
Thank you too! I worry about the children and grandchildren- not only ours but other species as well. I even worry about the trees and plants that cannot flee the coming climate. Rooted in place, they will perish.
